PSL : “they showed more desire than we did “- Kompela
Amakhosi lost their opening game to the 2016/17 against the Clever Boys at Milpark Stadium by 2 -1, with goals from Pelembe and Hlatshwayo.
This is the first time since 2008/09 that Kaizer Chiefs have lost an opening day game.
Amakhosi coach, Steve Khompela emphasized that Wits were the better side and utilized their chances quite well.
He furthermore stated that about four of his players were missing in action and that gave Wits an upper hand over them.
The Glamour Boys have characteristically enjoyed success at the Bidvest Stadium but came unstuck this evening with two headers from the opposition doing the damage as they went down 2-1.
In a post match interview with SuperSport, the Amakhosi Coach Kompela shared his thought
“I think one of the things that we did wrong tonight was we played to their strength, we allowed them to keep the ball in the air and didn’t bring the ball down and play,”
“Secondly I think their pressing game was better than ours – they showed more desire than we did. ”
“Those are the two defining things that I thought if we could have dealt with better we could have come through.”
“We knew that would happen and you try your utmost best to be ready for it and as it happens you say, “but goodness me how could it happen?” when you knew it was going to happen,” he said.
The former Maritzburg United coach was also unimpressed with a tactical ineptitude on the part of his players that allowed Wits to successfully press them throughout the game.
“We seemed to be reluctant to play under pressure and as a result their pressing game overcame our possession and also they kept the ball in the air and we didn’t bring it down,” concluded Komphela.
