PSL : The Urban warriors brush aside Matsatsantsa
Stuart Baxter suffered his first defeat as SuperSport United head coach, going down 3-1 to Ajax Cape Town at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday.
Tashreeq Morris scored for the first time this season before Kingston Nkhatha smashed home the equaliser, but second-half goals from Toriq Losper and Prince Nxumalo secured all three points for the Urban Warriors who move up to eighth.
The visitors started the better of the two teams and opened the scoring through Morris on 22 minutes. Nathan Paulse’s injury has opened the door for the sturdy forward, who himself has just recovered from a long lay-off; his towering header from a corner-kick leaving Rowen Williams with no chance.
In search of an immediate response, SuperSport pressed up field and went close through Dean Furman, who blasted just over from the edge of the area.
Thuso Phala played a delightful ball over the Ajax defensive line-up to set up Jeremy Brockie, who looked sure to score, but the New Zealand international failed to make sufficient contact.
The miss, though, mattered little as Nkhatha found the back of the net soon after, for the second home game in succession. Thato Mokeke steered a precise long ball into the path of the Zimbabwean forward, who smashed an unstoppable half-volley into the roof of the net from an acute angle.
Losper restored Ajax’s lead in the 55th minute, the hard-running forward guiding a rasping shot past Williams who was caught out of position at his near post.
Prince Nxumalo, eager to prove a point against his former employers, doubled the visitors’ lead with 74 minutes on the clock. The Ajax forward leaving the SuperSport defenders in his wake before providing a cool finish.
Sibusiso Khumalo saw his free-kick attempt rattle the side-netting in stoppage time, but that is as good as it would get for Matsatsantsa in the second-half as they slip down to 12th.
