PSL : Orlando Pirates make it three wins in a row
Orlando Pirates cruised to a 5-0 win over Jomo Cosmos at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening, to record a third successive Absa Premiership victory for the first time this season.
Ezenkosi had Cheslyn Jampies sent off after 13 minutes for a two-footed lunge on Luvoyo Memela, leaving referee Victor Gomes in no doubt.
Ayanda Gcaba, Sifiso Myeni, Mpho Makola and Tendai Ndoro scored in the first half, before Gift Motupa added a fifth in the 90th minute. As a result Pirates move up to sixth on the log standings – Cosmos drop below AmaTuks into 15th.
Gcaba opened the scoring after 11 minutes. The Pirates centre-back stayed up from a corner kick and after Cosmos failed to clear their lines, Memela played in his teammate, who fired past Sherwin Naicker at his near post.
Jampies, included in Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana Bafana squad for upcoming 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Cameroon, was eager to prove a point , but two minutes later he received his marching orders for a careless challenge.
Cosmos had a night to forget and after Edwin Gyimah failed to pounce on a mistake by Naicker, Memela picked out an unmarked Myeni, who doubled the hosts’ lead with a towering header on the half hour mark.
With Ezenkozi at sixes and sevens, Makola surged forward and with no one closing him down the Buccaneers midfielder curled a trademark effort into the back of the net in the 39th minute.
Ndoro made it 4-0 three minutes later. With Jampies in the changing room, the right flank was exposed, leaving room for Gyimah, who set up Ndoro for an easy finish – the Zimbabwean continuing his goal-scoring form.
Brighton Mhlongo was a mere spectator throughout the match, with Pirates continuing their onslaught following the break.
Myeni, Ndoro and Motupa squandered glorious chances before the latter made it 5-0 in the final minute of regulation time, gliding past Naicker and tapping into an empty net to help Pirates to their biggest win over Cosmos.
