PSL : Mthiyane, Manzini give Chippa win
Chippa United defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-0 in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The home side dominated the opening stages of the game. However, Chippa took full control of the game in the second half, scoring two goals after the hour mark.
Abafana Bes’thende began the match brightly looking to grab an early goal. Mwape Musonda intercepted a pass in the second minute and passed the ball to Kudakwashe Mahachi, who fired wide.
Namibia international winger Deon Hotto had a chance to put Arrows into the lead in the 17th minute from a free-kick on the edge of the box. But the skilful player’s effort from the set-piece missed the target.
On the half hour mark, Chippa’s defender-cum-midfielder Nkosinathi Mthiyane took a powerful shot at Arrows goal, but keeper Nkosingiphile Gumede safely held the ball with ease.
Arrows’ Zambian international striker Musonda unleashed a shot from range nine minutes before the interval and it failed to trouble Chippa keeper Daniel Akpeyi as it sailed wide.
Chippa striker Aristide Bance had a chance to put his side into the lead eight minutes after the restart, but the Burkina Faso international forward missed the target from close range.
In the 62nd minute, new Chippa signing David Zulu fired from range, forcing Arrows’ shot-stopper Gumede into a top save as the visitors looked to break the deadlock.
The visitors took the lead in the 64th minute through their left-footed winger Mthiyane. The attacker started a counter attack from the back and he finished it off to make it 1-0 to Chippa.
Zimbabwe winger Mahachi played a dangerous curling corner-kick in the 79th minute and it ended in Akpeyi’s hands in the Chippa box as Arrows looked to grab a late equaliser.
Nevertheless, in the 90th minute Chippa substitute and striker Lerato Manzini sealed the Chilli Boys’ victory when he beat Gumede with a left footed finish.
