PSL : MidWeek Wrap up
Bidvest Wits and Black Aces dropped further behind red-hot Mamelodi Sundowns after the Absa Premiership midweek action was done and dusted.
Gavin Hunt’s Students, who are now nine points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, suffered a 0-1 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday. A 57th minute goal from George Maluleka was all that separated the two teams on the evening in question.
Bongani Khumalo, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Camaldine Abraw all recorded yellow cards during the high intensity match.
Sundowns, who now have a commanding lead in the standings, extended their unbeaten run to 15 league matches when they beat Pirates 2-1 at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
Leonardo Castro opened the scoring for Bafana Ba Style, in the 19th minute. Zimbabwean Khama Billiat scored his eighth goal of the season in the 35th minute, extending Sundowns’ lead before the intermission.
Mpho Makola gave the Buccaneers some renewed hope with 20 minutes to play but his team could not gather enough momentum to steal a point, at the very least.
Sundowns had disciplinary problems throughout the fixture, recording five yellow cards. However, this did not hamper their mission. The Pretoria club has now accumulated 45 points after 19 league matches, while Pirates are seventh, having taken 23 points in 18 matches.
In the final fixture on Wednesday, Mpumalanga Black Aces and Ajax Cape Town produced a four-goal thriller at the Athlone Stadium.
Riyaad Norodien and Prince Nxumalo established a two-goal lead for the home team – a lead they took into the halftime interval. However, Thanduyise Khuboni and Bhongolwethu Jayiya brought the scores level in the second stanza, both Black Aces players having come off the bench.
Ajax moved a point ahead of Bloemfontein Celtic, consolidating their position among the top eight in the league, while Aces dropped to third in the league standings, after 18 rounds.
