PSL : Cosmos sink Stars to boost hopes
A free kick by Cheslyn Jampies gave Jomo Cosmos a valuable 1-0 Absa Premiership win over Free State Stars at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday afternoon.
Ezenkosi wasted a couple of scoring chances after Jampies’s 53rd minute goal, while Stars saw two very good efforts saved by Sherwyn Naicker, one of them in optional time after the 90 minutes.
The first real chance at goal came after 14 minutes following a series of corners by Cosmos. Finally, after sustained pressure on the Stars goal area, Jampies got his head onto a swerving corner and headed downward, but Stars ‘keeper Daouda Diakite managed an excellent one-handed saved.
A few minutes later Cosmos felt they had a good opportunity for a penalty when Brice Aka tumbled inside the box in what seemed like a clumsy challenge by two defenders on his back. But the match official decided that nothing was wrong with the challenge.
Free State Stars’ first genuine chance of the first half arrived on 35 minutes when Danny Venter fired in a strong left-footed shot towards the near post, but Sherwyn Naicker made a strong save to keep the score goalless.
On the stroke of halftime, Cosmos got a free kick from deep inside the field, but Jampies, despite striking the ball well, could not keep it down and it flew over the goals.
Seven minutes into the second half and Cosmos went into the lead through the impressive Jampies. The left-footed set-piece piece specialist curled his attempt low and through a gap in the wall to beat Diakite at his near post.
Cosmos should have taken a 2-0 lead when Charlton Mashumba struck the cross bar from a very good position where he had no excuse to miss the target.
Moments later Stars got into a good position and forced an excellent low save by Naicker, who palmed away an effort at goal, which would have drawn Stars back level.
With ten minutes to go, Mashumba had another chance on goal, but this time he missed the target altogether.
Stars should have equalised in the 91st minute when Venter fired in a shot at goal, but Naicker made a good save once again – the ball rebounded right into the path of Ayanda Nkosi, but he could not react fast enough to put the ball away.
