PSL : Absa Prem Weekend wrap
Platinum Stars improved their chances of competing in CAF competition next season, when they beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.
A 67th minute goal from Ndumiso Mabena was ultimately all that separated the two teams.
The result means that Stars now have 43 points in the Absa Premiership, which puts them four points ahead of Kaizer Chiefs, who currently occupy fourth spot on the Absa Premiership standings.
Aces’ opportunity to move past Chiefs in the league standings was lost, as the result means they remain two points behind Amakhosi, after 23 matches.
In the other fixture on Sunday, Maritzburg United failed to make any signifiant progress in their struggle to avoid relegation, when they could only muster a 2-2 draw against Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Philani Zulu opened the scoring for the visitors in the sixth minute of the fixture, with Andile Mbenyane equalising five minutes later. Chippa then established the lead through Joseph Molangoane in the 39th minute, before Evans Rusike drew it back on the 45 minute mark.
Maritzburg United remain 16th in the league standings, having accumulated 16 points this season. Chippa United are still sixth on the league standings.
SuperSport United had a successful trip to the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday, when they walked away with three unanswered goals and three points after the match against Golden Arrows.
Dove Wome, Kingston Nkhatha, and Jeremy Brockie did the job for the visitors.
Free State Stars did enough to consolidate their position in the top eight, when they secured a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City at Goble Park. Lucky Mohomi and Muzikayifani Ngidi were the goal scorers on the day.
