NedbankCup : Students have cup fight, Hunt
Speaking ahead of Friday’s show-down with Bloemfontein Celtic, Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt feels his team’s never-say-die attitude is the perfect attributer for the Nedbank Cup.
The match takes place at the Bidvest Stadium, with kick off set for 20H00. There is one other game on Friday night as well, down in Cape Town, where Steenberg United host Platinum Stars at the Athlone Stadium.
The Clever Boys have shown several times in the league this season, such as when James Keene scored the winner with the last play of the game against Maritzburg United recently, that they are a team that fights right up until the final whistle.
While being concerned over his team’s injury list, Hunt is optimistic about the form his side are in and is hopeful of making it through to the last 16.
“We would like to stay in all competitions this season. In South Africa generally teams raise their performances in cup competitions. Vilakazi, Mahlambi and Faty are out injured. These are spine players in the team. If you take Billiat, Kekana and Nthethe out the Sundowns team then you’ll understand what I mean by the spine of a team,” he said.
“I’ve done well in this competition. It keeps your season going. We have a good fighting team. We work hard. Bloemfontein Celtic will be highly motivated to play us judging by the current situation.
“We’ve won more than we’ve lost so I must say there is progress. We want to finish the season on a high. If your preparation is good, you will have a good season. We have to finish the season as well as we can. Homework is overrated. A team will play 4-4-2 every week then people will tell me about doing your homework. Which homework?”
Defender Thulani Hlatshwayo had similar sentiments to that of his coach’s:
“We’ve had a lot of come-backs lately. All the competitions we are still participating in are important. We controlled the game the last time we played Celtic. It was lack of concentration that played a role in that game. I think we can go through to the last 16 when we play Celtic on Friday.
