The Team of Choice started positively and should have opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Evans Rusike broke through on goal, but he was denied in a one-on-one with the Leopards keeper.

In the 17th minute Maritzburg made their early pressure pay when Lentjies curled the ball home from just inside the box, 1-0

The away side managed to hit back six minutes later after a swift passing move saw Roggert Nyunda score from close range after turning home a low left wing cross from Khunadi Nkoana, 1-1.

Leopards controlled the remainder of the half, but their finishing was poor and the teams entered the break all-square.

The away side continued where they left off and were unlucky not to take the lead on the hour mark when a 24-yard free-kick from Meshack Maphangule was well-saved by the Maritzburg keeper.

Ten minutes later the Team of Choice went in front for the second time when Bandile Shandu drove into the box and emphatically fired the ball home from 16-yards out, 2-1.

Leopards came close to equalising in the 77th minute when a 20-yard shot from Ivan Mahangwahaya struck the right-hand post.

Things went from bad to worse for the away side in the 82nd minute when Rendai Ndou was shown a red card for pulling Rusike down inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Lentjies made no mistake from the spot to hand his side a 3-1 win and a place in the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup.
