MTN8: Cape Town City FC Knock out Kaizer Chiefs from MTN 8

New franchise club Cape Town City FC saw off Kaizer Chiefs in a thrilling MTN 8 quarterfinals encounter, by 1 -0 at Cape Town Stadium.


The Cape Town-based club beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 to progress through to the semis of the tournament.

The MTN 8 becomes the second competition in which Kaizer Chiefs failed to progress beyond the first match after they were booted out from the Nedbank 2015/16 in the last 32 by Orlando Pirates

Chiefs were last eliminated in the Quarter-finals of the MTN8 back in 2012/13 when the lost 4-1 to Sundowns.

Eric Tinker has always gotten the better of his opposite number Steve Kompela even when the City coach was still at Pirates

Bongolwethu Jayiya cross found unmarked Matt Sim in the 7th minute who made no mistake to put the hosts ahead after a corner kick and City capitalized after a counter-attack to beat Amakhosi number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and put the ball into an empty net.

Chiefs threw everything and should have equalized when Twala blistered with pace only for his shot to be saved by man of the match Shu-Aib Walters to deny Amakhosi an equalizer.

City new striker Lehlohonolo Majoro should have capitalized on a sloppy defense error but Lorenzo Gordinho put a brave block to stop his shot.

Chiefs put pressure in search of a goal before half time but failed to crack the City defense marshaled by former Pirates defender Tshepo Gumede.

The first half ended with City in front.

Chiefs started off well in the second half, threw everything they got and put pressure on City but team captain Vincent Kobola and company worked tirelessly throughout the second half.

Shu-Aib put a stunning save to deny new Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele a goal that could have proved much for the Naturena based club.

An Edward Manqele shot was saved by Man of the Match Shu-Aib who punted the shot outside to a corner.

Jayiya , Shu-Aib and Modiba from City all got yellow cards for time wasting and the referee added 5 minutes extra after full time.

Chiefs went all out but their chances went to waste and City saw off Amakhosi and won the match 1-0 to progress through to the semis.

The draw for the semi-finals will be conducted on Sunday after the Sundowns and Supersport game
