MDC: Weekend wrap
It continues to be a four way race in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, with Mamelodi Sundowns leading the way after 12 rounds played.
Sundowns’ (on 27 points) lead now however is only a single point, after their Reserve side lost 2-1 to Polokwane City on Saturday, the Limpopo team moving into second spot with 26 points. Polokwane City scored first through William Baloyi 18th minute effort, before Siphesihle Nzimande made it 2-0 in the 85th minute. Ntandoyenkosi Ngubane pulled one back for the Tshwane side a minute later, but it proved to be too little too late.
Ajax Cape Town moved away from the foot of the table and up into 11th spot after they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Black Aces. Masilake Phohlongo gave the Urban Warriors a 45th minute lead, a Keagan De Kerk own goal making it 2-0 on the hour, before Clint Fredericks added a third in the 85th minute.
Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates ended the weekend in seventh and 12th positions respectively after a 1-1 draw, Liam Jordan netting on 14 minutes for the Students before Lehlohonolo Ntshali scored eight minutes from time for the Buccaneers.
Moving on to Sunday, and Maritzburg United continued their excellent run of form in the MDC, ending the weekend in fourth spot, four points off the pace, after they eased to a 3-1 win over Free State Stars at the Harry Gwala Stadium. Mohammed Anas (23’), Lindokuhle Zondi (75’) and Duane Potgieter (81’) scored for the Team of Choice, Cosmas Mzizi having briefly restored parity for the visitors on 60 minutes.
Bloemfontein Celtic beat AmaTuks 2-0.
There was little separating SuperSport United and Jomo Cosmos as the two Gauteng aides played to a 1-1 draw, Khanyisa Mayo’s 34th minute penalty cancelled out by Stephanis Sibanyoni’s goal in the 59th minute.
Golden Arrows (third, two points off the summit) were unable to get the win that would have taken them top as they lost 3-0 to Platinum Stars, for whom Ruele Modise netted a brace, with Thembelani Matlawe scoring in between. Stars are seventh on the standings.
The match between home based Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs proved to be a five goal thriller, AmaKhosi running out 3-2 victors at the Wolfson Stadium. Dillon Goss (6’) put the Chilli Boys in front early on, but Nkosingiphile Ngcobo equalized five minutes later. Emmanuel Letlotlo scored for Chiefs on 60 minutes, but Bulumko Ceki restored parity only eight minutes later before Letlotlo got the match winner in added time.
