EPL : Manchester City’s Isco transfer chase could mean the end for Samir Nasri
Boss Pellegrini wants a reunion with his old Malaga playmaker who is unsettled at Real Madrid, but red-tape means his arrival may end Frenchman’s season
Samir Nasri’s season could be over if Manchester City land Real Madrid star Isco.
The Blues are hoping to capture the Spanish international playmaker in a potential £30million deal after being alerted to the 23-year-old’s rift with boss Rafa Benitez at the Bernabeu.
And if City are successful, that would make midfielder Nasri the player most likely to miss out when Manuel Pellegrini resubmits his squad to the Premier League at the end of this month.
Clubs can name a maximum of 17 foreign players – and City already have a full quota.
Recruiting Isco would force Pellegrini into making a major decision – and Nasri is currently sidelined after surgery.
The France international’s injury-plagued season hit rock-bottom in November when he was forced to undergo an operation on a tendon problem in his right leg.
His recovery time was estimated at four to six months – meaning that the earliest the 28-year-old could return to action would be the end of March.
The capture of Isco would give the City boss a similar conundrum – although Nasri’s injury issues would make the decision easier.
Pellegrini thought Isco would be following him from Spanish side Malaga when he became Etihad boss in the summer of 2013. But Real hijacked the proposed £23m deal.
That hasn’t deterred the Blues from trying to get their man this time.
Isco hasn’t played for Real since they lost 1-0 at Villarreal three weeks ago and is desperate for more game time as he looks to cement a place in Spain’s squad for Euro 2016.
Benitez is believed to be unhappy with the player’s attitude, so a switch to City would suit everyone.
