EPL : Kurt Zouma will miss Euro 2016 due to injury

Chelsea and France defender Kurt Zouma will this week undergo knee surgery which will rule him out for the rest of the season. He will miss the EURO 2016 which will be hosted by his country France.

Zouma landed awkwardly early in the second half of the drawn Premier League contest against Manchester United and was taken off on a stretcher.
“Chelsea Football Club’s medical team have diagnosed that Kurt Zouma sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament during yesterday’s (Sunday) Premier League game against Manchester United,” Chelsea’s website announced on Monday

A statement on Chelsea’s official website read ” Kurt will undergo surgery in the next 48 hours and is expected to be out for approximately six months”

Zouma was a preferred choice to player alongside John Terry ahead of England vice captain Gary Cahill. He started 16 of the 19 Chelsea games in all competitions. Kurt has established himself as a first-team regular and quietly impressed at the heart of the defence.

The strong defender vowed to return “stronger”. The 21-year-old wrote on twitter : “Scan today has shown I injured my ACL. I will have surgery this week & will come back stronger. Thank you everyone for all the messages.”

The 21 year old arrived at Chelsea during the January 2014 window at a fee of $12million from Saint-Etienne.

Chelsea will have to look at Cary Cahill to close the gap.

Chelsea left-back Cesar Azpilicueta told the Evening Standard: “Gary is one of the veterans of the team. We know his quality and in this squad, it is always important to be ready.

“We need everybody, we have big games coming up and all of us have to be ready.”

With Zouma out, Cahill will likely line-up alongside Terry in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle.
