Boxing: Women boxers to take to the ring in Gauteng
The Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation, Boxing South Africa and SABC proudly present the Women In Boxing Gauteng 2017 tournament taking place this Friday, 08 September 2017 at the Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre in Mogale City, brought to you by Zantsi Showtime Productions.
The boxing tournament will feature 6 bouts, including fights for the vacant South African Bantamweight and World WBF Featherweight titles. The main event for the night, the World WBF title fight, between Nonie Tenge and Mapule Ngubane promises to be a clash to forever be remembered.
The Gauteng women’s boxing programme seeks to celebrate and elevate the role of women in boxing, bridging the gap between their male counterparts. The tournament will give the fighters a platform to showcase their extraordinary skills in addition to promoting social cohesion and contribute towards building the townships economies of Gauteng by hosting events in the province’s developing communities.
“I am very excited to be hosting this event in Gauteng, the Home of Champions and sporting excellence. Tournaments such as these are pivotal in giving much needed exposure for women’s boxing at a professional level. Boxing remains a male dominated sport and these strides are being made to continue in making progress in elevating and equalizing women’s place in boxing and the sports fraternity as a whole.” says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko.
