VarsityFootball : Rainy Bellville favours UWC, who leave with three points
Round three of the 2017 Varsity Football season began in Bellville as UWC managed a 4-0 win over UFH, who are yet to score in 2017.
The encounter between UWC and UFH took place in Bellville the home of UWC. After two rounds UWC had won one game and lost one, while UFH were yet to earn a point.
The weather in Bellville was not conducive to sleek, passing football, as it was windy and rainy. Both teams were very cautious from the first whistle. UWC captain Josh Silent could have taken the lead early on, but his shot was blocked brilliantly by Bhanya Luyolo, who kept it out from point-blank range.
As the game opened up chances were created with UFH almost taking the lead through Kgomotso Nkabinde, but his shot was saved by Ryan Ramandh. With fifteen minutes to go before halftime UWC took the lead when Xolisa Makhubalo calmly slotted the ball into the net after a beautiful pass from Xolela Ndude.
The second half started off at a high pace with UFH looking for an equaliser and that left them vulnerable at the back. Charlton Fritz made sure that UFH paid for their lapse in concentration, making the score 2-0 to the home team. Just moments later Phiwokuhle Mpalala made it 3-0, netting his third goal of the 2017 Varsity Football season.
With the score at 3-0, UFH kept pushing for that elusive goal to pull themselves back into the game, but were let down by their composure in the final third. Kgomotso Nkabinde pulled the strings for his team in the midfield but the finishing let his good work go to waste.
With 90 minutes on the board, substitute Garren Smith grabbed the fourth goal for UWC with a neat header off a Mpalala cross. It ended 4-0.
