U17 : Korea Republic beats Brazil

Korea Republic pulls a shock as they beat Brazil 1-0.

2718551_big-lndKorea Republic opened their FIFA U-17 World Cup account with a dramatic victory against ten-man Brazil. Jang Jaewon’s winner, ten minutes from time, saw Choi Jincheul’s side to the top of Group B after the first round of games.

In a tense and terse affair of few opportunities, Barcelona’s Lee Seungwoo shone brightest, finding space in between the Brazilian defence and midfield.

It was the Korea Republic No 10 who went closest in the opening half, following up after Kim Jungmin’s shot was blocked by Juliano, but his effort did not find the target.

The match exploded into life in the closing stages. Kim Kinya created his side’s goal, with a twisting and turning run down the Korean right culminating in Lee Sangheon turning the ball into the middle of the penalty area. Jang met the ball and slammed the ball home with his left foot, sending the noisy Korean fans in the stands into raptures.

In the final moments, Geovane was dismissed for a high challenge on substitute Lee Sangheon, before Lee Sangheon almost doubled the Asian side’s lead after a wonderful slaloming run – but Juliano was equal to his shot.

Korea Republic top Group B from England and their next opponents Guinea, who drew 1-1 earlier in Coquimbo, with Brazil sitting bottom of the nascent standings.
