Tennis : Porsche joins Nike and TAG Heuer as it suspends sponsorship of Maria Sharapova

Luxury carmaker Porsche, announced today(Tuesday) it would suspend tennis player Maria Sharapova as its brand ambassador in light of her admission that she failed a doping test.

Maria+SharapovaThe Russian 28-year-old tennis star admitted she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open due to a substance she was taking for health issues.

Ms Sharapova announced on Monday she had tested positive for meldonium, an endurance-enhancing drug.

The player said she had been taking the medicine under its alternative name mildronate for the past 10 years for health reasons and that she had not known the substance was banned.

“We regret the current news about Maria Sharapova. Until further details emerge and we are able to analyse the situation, we have decided to suspend planned activities,” Porsche said in a statement.

TAG Heuer and Nike Inc., two of her biggest sponsors, have already suspended ties with the tennis star while the case is being investigated.
