SAFA : Banyana Banyana, u23 off to Brazil for draw
Banyana Banyana and the U23 technical team leave for Brazil on Wednesday to attend the 2016 Rio Olympics draw that will take place on 14 April at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Each of the two teams will be represented by a coach and team manager.
Banyana Banyana will be represented by coach Vera Pauw and manager Portia Makgalamele while coach Owen da Gama and Levy Ramajoe will represent the u23.
South Africa, Sweden and Germany are the only three countries that qualified for men and women’s 2016 Olympic finals, a rare feat in modern football.
“This is quite unique and prestigious to have all our teams qualifying for the Rio Olympics. We might stumble here and there but there is no need to despair. The future of our football looks very bright and our Vision 2022 is very much on track,” said SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan. The SAFA President said the two teams would go to Brazil to compete and not just make the numbers.
“Both Banyana Banyana and the u23 will go to Brazil to make a statement and will step up their preparations once the draw has been done on Thursday,” added Dr Jordaan.
After the draw, the organisers will run a workshop for coaches and managers while the following day will be put aside for site inspection for all the qualified team.
