PSL : Pirates sink Chilli Boys for first PSL win of 2017/18 season

Orlando Pirates beat Port Elizabets outfit 1-0 at home courtesy of a Thamsanqa Gabuza header in the first half.

Gabuza scored the solitary goal of the match after receiving a perfect cross from debutant Innocent Maela.

It was a battle in the middle of the park as Thamsanqa Sangweni stamp his authority with the likes of Sandile Zuke and Kurt Lentjies fighting for possession.

Pirates had the better of Chilli Boys in the 30th minutes but Gabuza failed to connect with a cross from Thabo Qalinge but the striker made up for the mistake as he scored to put Pirates ahead in the 37th minutes.

Chilli Boys started the second half with an intention to score an equalizer and substituted Lentjies for and later on brought in Mark Mayambela for Menzi Masuku.

Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands who made his first appearance for the Buccaneers was called into action as Mako Paseka laid a perfect pass with the Pirates keeper clearing for a corner.

Pirates Soweto born midfielder Thabo Qalinge saw his shot cleared off the line in an attempt that could have put the Buccaneers 2-0 by former Pirates player James Okwuosa.

Pirates substituted Musa Nyatama for Luvuyo Memela and 15 minutes later substituted Thamsanqa Gabuza for Tendai Ndoro.

Chippa threw everything they had and a foul by Sangweni in the 76th minutes on Sizwe Mdinzo posed a threat but Sekola shot deflected and resulted in a corner.

Mark Mayambela who marked his return to the Chilli Boys with a good performance and nearly leveled matters as his free kick was on target only for Sandilands to pull a brave save.

Pirates brought in Issa Sarr for Mpho Makola in the 80th minutes to stabilize their defense.

Pirates midfielder Issa Sarr was fouled by Zitha Macheke just before the end of the game with the defender receiving a yellow card.
