PSL : Orlando Pirates, Supersport United claim top eight spots
Orlando Pirates and Supersport United share the spoils in what many viewed as dress rehearsal for next week Nedbank Cup
Goals from Orlando Pirates Sfiso Myeni and Mpho Makola penalty earned them two goals while Bradley Grobler and Denwin Farmer made sure both teams share the spoils and claimed their top eight spots.
The draw was good enough for the Buccaneers to make sure that they retain their record of always being in the top eight.
Thabo Rakhale was a thorn in the middle of the park as he gave Dean Furman and other Supersport defenders a terrible time with his skills and runs.
Supersport should have taken the lead courtesy of Kingston Nkhatha in the opening minutes of the first half but he shot straight to Mhlongo and Dove Wome failed to guide the ball into the net from a rebound.
Orlando Pirates started taking control of the game, but Supersport restricted them to long range shots.
Thabo Rakhale tried a long range volley shot after a pass from Sfiso Myeni but the shot went wide.
Minutes later it was Thabo Matlaba who had a great game on the left as he unleashed a thunderbolt from outside the box but his shot went wide as well.
Both teams went into the break level at 0 – 0.
Bartex made changes at the beginning of the second half bringing in Brockie for Mathebula.
The second half picked up from where the first ended with both teams attacking each other with caution.
Tandai Ndoro should have opened the scoring in the 50th minute after a great move by Mpho Makola but he rushed his shot and couldn’t direct it to goal.
Thabo Rakhale was in the thick of things again in the 65th minute.
Rakhale tried curling a long range shot to the top right-hand corner but Williams was equal to the task and pushed the ball for a corner
Myeni found the back of the net for the opener in the 67minute after the Supersport defenders failed to clear their lines properly to make it Pirates 1 – 0 Supersport.
SuperSport made their second change by introducing Grobler in the place of Wome.
The substitution seemed to have inspired Supersport United as four minutes later Grobler tap in from close range after some great work from the substitute Brockie to make it 1-1.
Supersport defenders failed to track Thabo Matlaba’s run into the box and Thuso Phala fouled him in the box and they were penalized.
Mpho Makola stepped up to convert from the spot to make it 2 – 1 in favor of Pirates.
Orlando Pirates thought they were home and dry but a lapse of concentration cost them as Farmer scored from close range to make 2 -2 .
