PSL : Celtic, Arrows in goalless draw
Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows played to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership game played at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
Phunya Sele Sele remained on position 12 on the Absa Premiership standings follow the draw, while Abafana Bes’thende also stayed 11th on the league table.
Arrows were dealt a major blow just 11 minutes into game as they were forced to substitute John Arwuah, who had sustained a groin injury. He was replaced by Chris Katjiukua.
The first shot on target came six minutes later when Celtic midfielder Lyle Lakay’s effort from a set-piece was easily gathered by Arrows goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva.
The visitors were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Phunya Sele Sele box in the 25th minute and Arrows forward Frank Mhango stepped up and placed it just over the crossbar.
A minute after the half-hour mark, Arrows midfielder Nduduzo Sibiya received the ball on the left and he cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot which sailed over the goal-posts.
The home side were reduced to ten men when their captain Bevan Fransman received his second yellow card and the Celtic defender was sent off five minutes before half-time.
Arrows goalkeeper Mbaeva was called into action just a minute into the second-half when he parried away Celtic winger Lakay’s low shot from the edge of the box.
In the 53rd minute, Kudakwashe Mahachi combined with his Arrows teammate Deon Hotto before forcing Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb into an easy save.
Celtic nearly broke the deadlock nine minutes later when Dumisani Zuma pounced on a loose ball inside the Arrows box, but Mbaeva reacted quickly and made a save from close range.
The Namibian shot-stopper was again called into action in the 69th minute when he gathered Phunya Sele Sele midfielder Lantshane Phalane’s long range effort with ease.
Arrows were also reduced to ten men in the 76th minute when Nkanyiso Mngwengwe received his second booking of the game and he was red carded.
Nevertheless, Mbaeva denied Celtic substitute Vuyani Ntanga in stoppage time with a great one-handed save to ensure that the game ended in a goalless stalemate on the day.
