The result ends ‘Downs winning run in the league at six matches, but stretches their unbeaten record to 16 games. Arrows remain eighth while the Brazilians failed to restore their nine point gap atop the log standings.

The early exchanges offered little in terms of attacking threat from either side with Wayne Arendse going closest to the opener in the first half-hour. The centre back forcing Maximilian Mbaeva into a comfortable save at his near post from a Teko Modise free-kick, on seven minutes.

Sundowns had a good shout for a penalty turned down by the referee in the 35th minute. Chris Katjiukua clattered Khama Billiat in the area, but the official waved play-on to the frustration of Pitso Mosimane and his technical team.

Teko Modise then saw his free-kick attempt sail wide of goal before Billiat squandered a golden chance to put ‘Downs ahead four minutes before the break.

The Zimbabwe international broke free on goal, but was unable to beat Mbaeva who made a good save with his legs.

Arrows were more adventurous in the second stanza and went close through Rodney Ramagalela just before the hour, the striker beat Denis Onyango to the ball, but couldn’t direct his attempt on target.

Mosimane introduced ‘super sub’ Anthony Laffor after the interval and the Liberia international almost had the desired effect. Having successfully ghosted into the area he could only succeed in directing his header attempt straight at Mbaeva.

Laffor had another chance in stoppage time, but having controlled Lebohang Mokoena’s cross, the winger failed to put the ball in the back of the net.

In the end Arrows stood firm to leave the Capital with a point, having now taken four points off ‘Downs this season.
