The opening weekend of the NFD sees five games on Saturday and three on Sunday, spread across the Gauteng, KZN, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and North West provinces.

Last season saw Baroka FC gaining automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership, while Highlands Park also made the step up to the top flight after they beat the University of Pretoria and Mbombela United in the Promotion Play-offs.

As a result, the University of Pretoria dropped back down to the National First Division, as did Jomo Cosmos, who finished in 16th and last position on the Absa Premiership table.

Making the move up to from the Second Division and hoping to make a positive impact in their first ever seasons in the NFD are Real Kings FC and Magesi FC, who were the top two clubs at the ABC Motsepe League Second Division play-offs last month.
