NedbankCup : Santos edge out Bucks in Nedbank Cup last 32
Santos are through to the Nedbank Cup round of 16 after they beat Mthatha Bucks 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
The only goal of the game came on 56 minutes and was scored by Iqraam Rayners, who found the far corner of the net with an audacious shot from out on the right flank.
The match had proved to be an exciting contest throughout the 90 minutes, action flowing from end to end all night as both goalkeepers were kept busy, Peoples’ Team keeper Tashrique Goldman winning the man of the match award.
There were first half chances for Bucks’ Mkhatshwa and Santos’ Suhayl Allie, but neither had the beating of the opposition keeper.
Carl Lark missed a good chance after the break when he headed over the bar, but Rayners was then to put the Cape side in the lead when he surprised Mlungisi Maranti from an unexpected angle for what turned out to be the winner.
The Eastern Cape side pushed hard for an equaliser, but could not get past the outstanding Goldman, who made a brilliant stop to deny Qiniso Mahlobo seven minutes from time.
