La Liga : Weekend Wrap Up Results
Gary Neville still looking for his first win as his side holds a 10 man Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw and Atletico Madrid tops the top.
Barcelona were frustrated by Espanyol as the La Liga leaders were held to a 0-0 draw at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat. The result sends Barcelona one point clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, ahead of their home clash with Levante, while Espanyol rise to 11th.
Thomas Partey came off the bench to fire Atletico Madrid to a 1-0 win over struggling Levante and take Diego Simeone’s side two points clear at the top of La Liga. The Ghanaian midfielder scored a scrappy winner with nine minutes remaining to ensure his side took advantage of Barcelona’s goalless draw at Espanyol, although the reigning champions have a game in hand. Thomas also proved the difference in Atletico’s late win at Rayo Vallecano in their previous game, laying the ball on for Angel Correa to score the first goal in a 2-0 win, again after coming on in the second half.
Gary Neville is still without a La Liga victory with Valencia but would have been pleased to see his side come from behind twice to draw 2-2 in a thrilling encounter with 10-man Real Madrid.
Real took the lead after 16 minutes at the Mestalla as Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo combined superbly before the French striker slotted home, but Dani Parejo levelled from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.
A draw leaves Neville still looking for his first La Liga win since taking charge of Valencia last month.
Madrid, meanwhile, are now four points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid and two behind Barcelona having also played a game more than the European champions.
