KasiFootball: Quarterfinals Kicked off at Philly’s Games (Day 9)

The first day of the last 8 was exciting but all teams still have a chance leading to the second leg

Phomolong Sports Center (Day 7-8) was dubbed the park of pain as many favourite teams were knocked out of the 2016 Philly’s Games including the defending champions and last year runner up.

Alex Mates knocked out the defending champions Rebels on a 4-2 aggregate, while runner up Amandla were beaten by Guara Guara on penalties 5-3 and the crowd favourite team Sidl’kotini, a team that boosted the likes of Mboro and Shake it up were knocked out by Zone 14, 2-0.

Day 8 also saw the first ever Netball games at the Philly’s games.

It was now an opportunity for Esiqongweni to host the exciting games. The weather was on their side as it was cloudy and a bit raining which meant the players couldn’t complain about the heat and had to give their all for their teams to put one foot in the last four aka Semi Finals.

Day 9 Fixture (24-12-2016)





The first game of the Day 9 was between Zone 14 and Klipfontein United. Both teams have shown that they mean business in the previous games. They play exciting football and have picked up some supporters along the competition and have proven to be goal scorers as well.

It was Zone 14 who drew first blood when they scored early in the first half with a cracker of a goal, to lead the game and tie 1 -0. Like they have been doing so far in the tournament Klipfontein United replied to Zone 14 to make it 1 – 1. Klipfontein United have been dubbed “You score I score ” team due to their quick replies to goals at the Philly’s Game. The game went into the break with both teams locked at 1 -1.

Early in the second half, Zone 14 were reduced to 10 men when one of their players got a red card. The red card seemed to have angered or fuelled Zone 14 as they pushed even harder and were rewarded with a goal to lead the game 2-1.  Zone 14 were determined to put a day light between themselves and Klipfontein as they scored their third goal to make to lead 3-1.  Klipfontein managed to grab their second towards the end of the game to make the score 3-2 leading to their second tie. Zone 14 leads the tie 3-2 on aggregate, this promises to be the game of the day on Day 10.

The second game of the day was a massive clash between Ama BEE and Abarondoli. Abarondoli have been taking part in the Philly’s games for more than 10 years but are yet to taste the glory.  Ama BEE took an early lead in this 1st Leg clash., to lead the game 1 -0. Abarondoli tried to reply but it was Ama BEE who were back at it as they scored their second goal of the game to lead 2-0. The first half ended with Ama BEE in the lead by 2 – 0.

Abarondoli scored the quickest goal in the second half as it took them 32 seconds to grab their first goal and make the score 2-1. Abarondoli equalized from fantastic goal scored through a free-kick to make the score 2 -2. The game ended in a 2-all draw meaning both teams will have to fight it out in the second leg.

The third game of the say was between Umlilo and Alex Mates. Alex Mates grabbed attention when they disposed off the 2015 Philly’s Games Champions Rebels, 4-2 on aggregate. The game was briefly paused because UMLILO has lost their keeper through injury and they were forced into a keeper substitution. Alex Mates had a chance to take the lead after been awarded indirect free-kick inside the box after UMLILO keeper handled a back-pass from a defender. But the Gomora side missed the chance.

Alex Mates took the lead. A good break down the right led to a brilliant cut-back by Alex Mates winger Thabiso, who left the Alex Mates striker with a tap-in. The game went into break with the Gomora side leading 1 – 0. In the second half Umlilo managed to equalize to make the score 1 -1. Both teams looked like they were happy to settle for a draw as they didn’t push for a score a winner.

The last game of the day was between Mad Bulls and Guara Guara.  Guara Guara took the lead after a Cross from the right but the referee’s assistant flag was up and the goal was disallowed. The game went into the break locked at 0 – 0. Early in the second half Mad Bulls won a penalty. MAD BULLS number 9, Nyere messed up a golden chance for MAD BULLS to go 1 up as he missed. Guara Guara eventually scored through a beautiful free-kick to lead the tie and game 1-0.

The Philly’s games will be on a break 25 and 26 December 2016 to give players, officials and supporters time to be with their families as well as recharge their batteries. The games will resume on the 27 at 10:00 at Esiqongweni
