Phomolong Sports Center will be remembered as the house of pain for the 2015 Philly’s games Champions Rebels and Runner Up Amandla

Day 8 was the last day for the qualification of the last 8 and the 2015 Champions, Rebels went into the game wounded after suffering losses in the 1st leg, meanwhile the runner ups had all to do after playing to a one all draw

16:00 Umlilo vs Ama 1’s and 2’s

The first game of the day promised to be cracker as both Amandla and Guara Guara played to a one a piece draw in the first leg. That meant they both had to fight tooth and nail to book their last eight ticket. Guara Guara had made it through to the last 16 courtesy of penalities.

The last year runner ups, Amandla from straight line, Owned by MEC Panyaza Lesufi wanted to progress to the last eight by all means. The game started off on a slow pace with both sides filling each other out and not wanting to commit mistakes. It went into the break with both teams failing to find the back of the net. The second continued were the first one ended and the game ended with an aggregate score of 1-1 meaning it was going to be decided via penalties. The first penalty shootout of the last 16 and the second shootout in the competition for Guara Guara.

Amandla missed their first penalty and Guara Guara scored all their five to win the game 5-3 and knockout favourites as well as last year runner up. Amandla become the second seeded team to be sent packing.

Mad Bulls and Boko Haram took to the field for the second game of the day. Another match were both teams had to play their hearts out since they played to a goal less draw in the 1st leg. It was Mad Bulls who indicated their hunger and determination to reach the last eight, when they took the lead early in the first half. The goal forced Boko Haram to attack and that led to the game opening up a bit.

Mad Bulls won a penalty and converted to lead the game and tie 2-0, now Boko Haram has to throw the kitchen sink at them to come back into the game. Mad Bulls defense in the second half was solid and didn’t all Boko Haram any room or chance to score and at the same time Boko Haram had fixed their leaking defense.

The game ended 2-0 in favour of Mad Bulls as they booked their last eight ticket.

The much anticipated match kicked off with the defending champions Rebels taking on Alex Mates. The defending Champions came into the game wounded after suffering a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Gomora outfit.

The Rebels squad has many new faces as compared to the one that won this tournament last year. Alex mates showed no respect or fear to the Rebels. Almost like in the first leg Alex Mates took the lead early in the first half to make the aggregate score 3-1 forcing Rebels to attack with all they had. Alex mates dos well by keeping the ball away from the Rebels who at times looked frustrated

Alex Mates scored their second goal much to the joy of those who packed Phomolong Sports Center. The goal meant that Alex Mates had one foot in the last 8 stages as the aggregate score was now 4-1. Half time score was Alex Mates 2- 0 Rebels

Rebels score late in the second half to reduce the score but it was too little too late as the Gomora outfit marched into the last 8 on a 4-2 aggregate.

The last game of the day was between Umlilo and Ama 1’s and 2’s. Umlilo won the first leg 1-0. The first half failed to produce any excitement of goal. The packed sports center had to wait for the second half to see a goal. A brilliant free kick placed at top right hand corner. The took the lead and the aggregate stood at 2-0. The goal ensure that Umlilo booked the last ticke to the quarterfinals stages.

The 2016 edition of the Philly’s games will be remembered as the year of the under dogs.
