Philly’s Games expected to end at a highest note in a battle for R200 000

The 25th edition of one of the most compensating township competitions in South Africa is expected to end in a high note as Tembisa and Alexander teams will tussle for the R200 000 cheque.

Abarondoli and Alex Mates will be flying the flags of these townships high on today, Friday evening at Makhulong stadium.

Abarondoli have participated in this tournament for a couple of times without any lucky to win it.

Alex Mates from Alexander are the new kids on the block who came as underdogs and has raised many people’s eyebrows by reaching the climax. It is understood that this team has been assembled just ahead of the tournament and all its troops are born in Alexander.

The rewards at the Philly’s games have been increasing each and every year and this has always enthused the teams to go all out.

The previous champions, Rebels walked away with R160 000 in the 2015 edition while the second, third and fourth places took R30 000. This year apart from the champions the teams who were bashed out at the semi-finals will go home with R50 000 cash. Those teams are Zone 14 which was seeded through a draw and Mad bulls who also ended in the top 8 in the previous tournament.

This year’s edition saw some teams coming in with trending names such Ama-1’s &2’s, Sidl’kotini, Amablessers and Guara-guara. There were also teams from other provinces such as Siyabuswa United from Mpumalanga and the Gunners from Limpopo. Gunners were coming in for the second spell in the tournament and it has been unsuccessful in climbing the top 8 ladder thou they were Limpopo’s Philly’s games champions last year in March.

The event which was established by Philly Mathebula in 1992 has consistently exhibited soccer skills in different venues around Tembisa. Ivory Park which is under Midrand hosted this prestigious tournament for three days before its departure to Esangweni section for another three days. The busy constructed Andrew Mapheto Drive to Phomolong did not stop the people from attending the games which were exhibited for two days and later they proceeded to Esiqongweni sports grounds where the wrestle got even more mesmerizing. Mehlareng stadium just after Caprive hosted the tournament for one day.

Well known faces such as Panyaza Lesufi (MEC of education in Gauteng) who owns Amandla were seen at the games. Mpho Makola who was also discovered through this tournament, Floyed Mbele, Katlego Loke, Lerato “prodigal son” Tshabangu, Tsietsi Mahoa, Lebogang Manyama, Jerry Sikhosana, Rooi Mahamutsa and Benson Mhlongo were also seen watching from the stands.
