Inspirational Gert Thys giving back to the community|
Former South African Marathon winner Gert Thys over the weekend (Saturday 18 November 2017) took off kids and parents of Newtown location in Potsmansburg off the street to participate in family fun fare race which it had only two divisions 5 km and 10 km catering both males and females.
Attendance was overwhelming as participants was from infants up to elders and both enjoyed, more especially the event was first of its calibre and Newtown believe that it is possible that through sports life of community can change.
Gert’s event was given support by Tsantsabane Local municipality, Department of Sports&Culture, Beeshoek mine and Jimbos Supermarket as the main event sponsors then Saps offered safety then EMS make sure that event become injury free.
Local Mayor Maria Daniel of Tsantsabane was also present and she also manage to applaud Gert Thys for his inspirational initiative in building community through sports, “Gert Thys inspires leaders of tomorrow through sports, more especially marathon as the sports he participated on and excelled on as most of participants of today’s race first saw him on television during his comrade marathon and to see him today leading them, it’s so inspirational and self motivation to all of us and as local municipality we will off him support in building community through sports because kids gets involved into gangsterism at young age then teenage pregnancy as well as drug and alcohol abuse but through this initiative done by Gert Thys we will able to curb that and becomes healthy and sports community” concludes Local Mayor Maria Daniel.
Also in presence there was Local District Manager at the department of sports, arts,&culture Mr Melvin Smith who was also happy of what Gert Thys is doing in giving back to the community and as the department they donated Athletes attire to Local Athletes club and they will work closely with them through MPP(Mass Participation Programme) and he even stressed out that they will host event on the 16 December 2017 same place in bringing sports to the community and that was warmly welcomed by Newtown community.
The 5km race winner in women’s category won by Patricia Motshabi 22 years old from Kimberly born but came to the race from Johannesburg and on her race view she said ” It was difficult race because of weather, it was too hot hence even my finishing time is so bad 42:48 but all in all am happy and next year will be bigger than this”
Then men’s 5 km race won by Reginald Soulas 16 year old from Newtown and he’s also cross country runner at school…
10km winner was Kimberly’s finest Frik Gys 31 years old who was participated in this year Soweto Marathon and he’s working hard in doing well in all race he participate on and that he think it will get him sponsors to further his love on marathon..
Closing ceremony was very touching by the main man of the day who said ” It takes community to raise the child, him alone he can’t but with parents support as well as kids commitment and determination then all will be possible to share his experience with them to do achieve better than what he has achieved in his era and he thanked all participants as well as companies that assisted in making the event possible”
