EuropaLeague : Manchester United and Liverpool fans clash inside Old Trafford during Europa League game
Manchester United and Liverpool fans clashed inside Old Trafford towards the end of this evening’s Europa League game at Old Trafford.
Jurgen Klopp’s side came out on top on aggregate and there were unsavoury scenes in the stands as the final whistle approached.
Fans were involved in a fracas in the upper-tier of the East Stand with a seat even being thrown at one stage as supporters brawled.
It comes after Red Devils fans were accused of referencing the Hillsborough disaster in the first leg at Anfield, with reports of more unsavoury songs this evening.
There were also ugly scenes before the game as fans travelling into Manchester from Liverpool had been met with an abusive banner that read “murderers”.
On the pitch – Liverpool were comfortable as they drew 1-1 on the night to take a 3-1 aggregate victory.
Anthony Martial had given United the lead – and hope – from the penalty spot in the first half, but Philippe Coutinho’s solo effort killed the tie as a contest on the stroke of half-time.
Liverpool now go into the draw for the last eight – with a potential tie against Klopp’s old club Borussia Dortmund in the offing after they beat Tottenham 5-1 on aggregate.
