COSAFA Under 17 : Zambia disqualified for using over age players
Zambia have been booted out of the COSAFA Under 17 Championship taking place in Mauritius
Football Kenya Federation had lodged a complaint with Cosafa organizers after they had lost to Zambia 4-0 in their opening match of the tournament in Mauritius.
Prior to the tournament, Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) took all the under 17 players through an MRI scan and six players were even dropped.
The disqualification is said to be over the use of overage players during the tournament and among them one being striker Nicholas Mulilo.
A number of Kenyans and Zambians though questioned the use of Mulilo whose pictures circulated all over Social media and stated that he looked overage.
Kenya are now through to the semi-finals of the competition after the young Chipolopolo were tossed out on Thursday
It’s ben just confirmed from a number of sources from FAZ that Zambia has been disqualified from the Cosafa Under 17 Championship being hosted in Mauritius and the Association will update on the matter, later on, today.
According to the FKF head of delegation in Mauritius, Mr Chris Amimo, COSAFA has confirmed that Zambia has been disqualified and that Kenya will now replace them in the tournament.
“Tomorrow (Friday 29 July) we play South Africa at 12 pm at Stade Xavier François, (11am Kenyan time). COSAFA has confirmed to me that Zambia have been disqualified and it is good news. We lodged an official complaint and the law took its course,” Amimo told Soka.
The same has been confirmed by the Football Kenya Fede (FKF) who posted on their official Facebook and Twitter pages that the Andreas Spier’s charges will he now up against South Africa on Friday.
Kenya started the competition on a losing note going down 4-0 at the hands of Zambia before coming back from a goal down to overcome Madagascar 2-1 in their second group. Their last group game was another disappointment, getting a 4-0 beating by Malawi.
Kenya were already out of the tournament having lost their last Group match 5-0 to Malawi. The Kenyans coached by Andreas Piers however, managed to beat Madagascar 2-1 in another Group match.
Zambia were set to play Namibia in the Semi- Finals, later on, today but with the disqualification, Malawi will face Namibia and Kenya also go through as the second-placed side and will face South Africa.
Kenya, who are participating as guest team, will now face South Africa in the semis on Friday.
