Benni takes on the challenge at City |

When Cape Town City announced Benni McCarthy as their new coach, many didn’t believe that the once prolific striker will do so good as a head coach. The former UEFA Champions winner with Porto and the former Bafana Bafana superstar has shown character at his first club as a head coach Cape Town City football Club.

Not even coaches who have been in the PSL for some time did believe in him but he has shown his ability and eagerness to achieve on the hot seat as well. The club showed faith in him and so far he is not disappointing as he is repaying the faith.

He has kept a 100% record since the start of the season and is already in one final in the domestic league reaching the MTN8 final after ousting out the man who gave him his first professional experience with the then Cape Town club Seven Stars, Gavin Hunt who is head coach of BidVest Wits. Benni has bagged 3 wins against Wits in a short space of time.

He expressed after the win that he took the challenge when club chairman Mr. John Comitis approached him to take over the hot seat at the Citizens after the departure of Eric Tinkler. He stated that he is still shocked by his current form at the start of the PSL and credits that to his charges who have given all on the pitch and are fighting like soldiers.

“I could have stayed at SuperSport and enjoyed my job as a match analyst, sit in the media room and enjoy talking football for 90 minutes with less pressure but this is me and I want to achieve being on the field whether paying or coaching” states McCarthy.
