Athletics : 11th Greater Edendale Race

Sunday, 12 November 2017 will see the Greater Edendale community come alive again with the hosting of the annual road-running attraction, the Greater Edendale Race.

The event is a Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) CSI initiative, which is hosted in conjunction with the Msunduzi Municipality, the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association and media partner, Edendale Eyethu.

Race organisers expect nearly a thousand participants to converge on the FNB Wadley Stadium for the event, as plans are being put in place to ensure an exciting 10km race. Registration is currently taking place at Comrades House at 18 Connaught Road, Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg, weekdays between 08h00 and 16h30.

Prize money totalling more than R21,000 is up for grabs in various categories, with a generous first prize of R3,000 for the First Man and First Woman over the finish line respectively.

The first three walkers over the finish line for both the men’s and women’s races will also be rewarded. Additionally, a medal will be presented to all finishers, as well as T-shirts for the first 600 finishers.

Due to safety and logistical concerns, the event will no longer include a 5km Schools Challenge. Race Convenor, Macdonald Chitja says, “We are saddened to announce that as the organising committee, we have had to make a difficult decision to not continue with the hosting of the 5km Schools Challenge. It has become apparent that the route is not conducive for the safe running of the little ones as well as other logistical challenges.”

Chitja adds, “We will, however, look at other options to ensure an exciting day for those schoolchildren who are too young to participate in the 10km race.”

Safety and security is overseen by SAPS and the local traffic police, as well as sixty marshals and additional security guards who will be on duty on the day.

The entry fee for the 10km race is R40 for licensed athletes and participants must be at least 14 years old to run it. Temporary licenses will be available at the Registration Desk at a cost of R15 for those runners who are not licensed members of running clubs.

The event is run under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Athletics South Africa (ASA) and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA).

CMA Chairperson, Sifiso Nzuza has urged runners to be part of the community event saying, “This is a powerful Comrades CSI initiative that contributes to many young ones being exposed to the joys of running. I would like to urge all local Comrades runners to join us for the 11th edition of the Greater Edendale Race on 12 November 2017.”
