VarsityFootball : Venue change for Round Three match between NWU and UP-Tuks

The upcoming match between North-West University (NWU) and the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) will now take place at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds in Potchefstroom on Thursday, 10 August. Kick-off is at 18h30.

After two rounds, NWU are currently topping the log following two consecutive victories, while UP-Tuks are in sixth position. NWU will be hoping to extend their lead at the top after two rounds of convincing victories while UP-Tuks go in search of their maiden win.

In a statement released by the North-West University, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dan Kgwadi has expressed the reason for surrendering the team’s home fixture.

“Just before the Varsity Football match played at our campus in Mafikeng on 3 August 2017, when it is a custom to sing the national anthem, sections of our students on the stands refused to observe the singing of the national anthem, instead opting to sing their own version.

“We do the NWU team a great disservice and overshadow their excellent performance by engaging in this type of behaviour,” he concluded.

In response to the statement, Varsity Sports CEO Duitser Bosman said that Varsity Sports respects the university’s decision to move the match to a different venue.

“We will work together with the university to ensure that we offer the fans the best experience in a safe environment,” said Bosman.

All tickets purchased via the Varsity Sports app for the match, which was initially scheduled to take place at NWU-Mafikeng Stadium, will be voided and entrance to the match will be free of charge.

Varsity Football has enjoyed capacity crowds and bountiful goals this season, after only two rounds. Round Three is certain not to disappoint.

Other fixtures for 10 August include:

  • UWC vs UFH at 16h00 – UWC Sport Stadium
  • UJ vs TUT at 18h15 – UJ APB Sport Complex
  • Wits vs CUT at 18h30 – Wits Stadium
